Boredom

Why does it happen even with so much of entertainment?” “Boredom” Mental Health and Boredom in the Age of Generation- Z Boredom is one of the common feelings for young people today, especially Generation Z. The paradox is that this generation lives in an era full of options, entertainment, and technology, yet many of them frequently express feelings of boredom. This raises an important question: How can a person feel bored in a time when content and entertainment never stop? What is boredom psychologically? Boredom is not a temporary feeling of having nothing to do, especially for Generation Z. Rather, it is a psychological state in which a person feels that what they are doing does not stimulate their interest or does not carry enough meaning for them. Boredom occurs when the level of stimulation is too low, or when a person has become accustomed to very high levels of mental stimulation. And…Generation Z often lives in second situation. Boredom increases to Generation Z for several reasons, including: • Getting used to rapid stimulation: This generation grew up in an environment full of short videos, rapid scrolling, constant notifications, and quick switching between applications. All of these provide the brain with fast and repeated rewards. Over time, the brain becomes accustomed to this fast pattern. • Multiple choices: Generation Z lives in a world full of options, which can lead to choice overload and boredom. When there are too many options, it becomes difficult to commit to one activity for a long time. As a result, a person moves quickly from one activity to another without feeling satisfied. • Constant rapid switching: In the digital environment, a person can change what they are watching within seconds. • Reduce ability to sustain attention: Frequent switching between tasks and content makes the mind operate in a fragmented way. Over time, long periods of focus become more difficult, increasing the likelihood of boredom during activities that require continuity. • Looking for constant excitement: By nature, humans do not need excitement all the time. However, the digital environment makes people expect every moment to be enjoyable or stimulating. When life returns to its natural rhythm such as studying, working, or sitting quietly, person may feel that something is missing. Psychological effects of boredom on Generation Z Continuous boredom may lead to several psychological and behavioral outcomes, including: • Reduced motivation among Generation Z. • Difficulty committing to long-term activities. • Increased comparison with others and lower self-esteem. • Mental distraction and dissatisfaction. • Continuous search for external stimulation. • Rapid shifting between interests without continuing any of them. • A weakened sense of meaning, where individuals feel that what they do is not important. How can Generation Z deal with boredom?

  1. Reduce fast digital stimulation: Reducing time spent on fast-paced content helps the brain regain its natural ability to focus and enjoy simple activities.
  2. Train the brain to be patient: Engage in activities that require time, such as reading, exercising, or learning a new skill.
  3. Accept boredom sometimes: Boredom is not always negative; it can be part of the natural mental rhythm.
  4. Search for meaningful activities: Activities that create a sense of progress and achievement are less likely to cause boredom. In conclusion Boredom among Generation Z is not a sign of weakness or laziness. Rather, it is a natural result of living in a world filled with rapid stimulation and constant content. A mind that has become accustomed to speed sometimes needs to regain balance. When a person learns to slow down, give themselves time to focus, and allow space for exploration, boredom can transform from an annoying problem into a gateway to discovery and creativity. So be with those who create innovation and creativity Generation Z… the future needs you. Psychological Specialist Rawan Al-Hilo
